100 Dog breeds

The true meaning of categorizing and naming the breeds is never to money-tag or hierarchize them, the same thing applies to human races too. Stop buying lives when shelter animals die, adopt if you hope to expand your family as the value of life is way beyond what money can trade.

Prescription

Prescription

Doctor A:
Every Wednesday
twice on Saturday,
unleash yourself to run under the sun
and cry in the acid rain

But I say,
gently hug a cat when you look bad
pat a dog when you're sad.
It's not a cure-all
but without them
maybe we would have all gone mad.

Drawing cats in my secret base

I found a really good place where I can just kick back, do some reading, and have a cup of coffee. Plus I can go see and play with the cats taken care of by the coffee shop owners at the second floor. Those cats are brought back from the streets, some of them are badly injured and are no longer capable of living in the streets, so the coffee shop owners decided to keep them.

It is really heart-warming that a lot of people are doing things for the stray animals, in spite of how much extra time and effort they have to put in in order to feed these furry babies. Sometimes, almost all the times, we don't receive medals or prizes for doing good for others, but we know it's rewarding, in the way that only we can see and feel.

The kitties sneaked away my eraser as a toy last time I went there. I guess I will have to bring more next time. ;)

The old stray dog

(TNR: Trap, Neuter and Return)

It drizzled throughout the day, like it always did in the rainy season in Taipei. I was on my way home from the bookstore I work part-time for. That was when I met the skinny, trembling old dog.

He was sniffing the ground, trying his best to find some leftover in the traditional market. So I bought the biggest canned dog food I could find in the convenience store and stayed there until he finished gobbling up, perhaps it was the only meal he had in the day.

Then I had to go. I walked across the street and looked back. He was in the middle of the road looking at me. I know he didn't have enough, and I know he never wants to be a stray dog and live such a difficult life. I know he wants a home.

Can you scoot over a little bit

Can you scoot over a little bit

If I work at home, this is what usually happened.

He would gently push me away by his leg and I normally sat on only a third of the chair. (I felt like I was nearly squatting or training my thigh muscles...) Sometimes I won the entire chair because he got annoyed that as a cat he couldn't get 100% share of the chair, other times he got the chair because I left for other tasks.

Days with cats, never get bored!

Dogs in the traditional market

The dog which helped his owner to sell fruits in the marketplace by sitting on the truck nicely and grinning his innocent, dorky and lovable grin.

Only walking distance from my place, there is a traditional market where my family and I can always get the freshest and cheapest food and veggies. What makes me feel more excited than food about the market is that almost every time I walked through or by, I can spot the exquisite relationship and interaction between street dogs and the vendors.

Lower our sight level to their height

If we are willing to lower our sight level to their height,
we can see another aspect of life.

I went to an adoption fair in Songshan Cultural Park, Taipei, this weekend. I couldn't adopt them because I'm going to study in England soon, and my parents thought our place is already "saturated" with the 2 cats we adopted 3 years ago. Even though I couldn't bring them home, after the event I still went home with my heart warm and fuzzy and got my treasure that day.

Once this little boy saw the dogs in the enclosure, he sat down in front of it with no hesitation so he could play and interact with them. This was the most beautiful scene for me that day, and I believe there was the same beauty and warmth in the boy's as well as the dog's eyes.

Taipei cat cafe ZABU

Taipei cat cafe ZABU, located in Tian-mu, Taipei. See the map here

The cafe owner let the cat walk in and out of the cafe at the cat's free will, and didn't force him to stay in. I heard him said at the door to the cat, "You wanna come in? Come on in." and then he pushed open the door for the cat so he could walk in and perform his duty - sniffing and checking up on the customers.

I love the harmony between humans and things, humans and animals. I was so melted by the easy and unpretentious relationship between the cafe owner and the cat. The cat came and ate a bit and got to rest under the roof when it was raining, and the cafe owner was happy with it. Sometimes we want people to do things as we like, or even get upset if they don't. But it shouldn't be like this, the tension and the desire to control other people, other lives and try to control all the things as if we own them.

Life should be like this, or at least it'll be easier to live this way: Open a door for the cat.

My ideal picture of observational drawing

Cambridge School of Art offered me a second chance to submit more works before they decide whether or not they should give me a place in the MA Children's Book Illustration, only that they have to be observational drawings.

I didn't go out and draw from real life a lot before. But it was fun and exciting to let the pen go as quickly and precisely as possible when capturing what you see, because you don't get to know when they will move to another position or change their postures. The most difficult thing for me to start observational drawing is to decide what to draw. I only draw things that I feel connected to, but to be professional, I will definitely do more from now. And humans! I know... draw more human figures!

Scuba diving

There are some must-see and must-do in the tourist area, but for the local animals, it brings them a must-be-ruined or even a must-die impact, like scuba diving and sky lantern...etc. I'm not judging these activities or try to stop them from taking place, for they do have their profound educational and cultural meanings behind. I'm just hoping that we can try to minimize our impact to the local environment and residents, no matter they are human or the animals/plants. Well... but it's always better to leave them the way they were and not to interrupt, and there are always plenty of alternatives to your travel plans these days... :-P

When we travel elsewhere, just think about it that it's their home for generations and you definitely don't want people you don't know come into your sweet home, leaving trashes everywhere and terrifying your family for their own amusement, do you?  :o)

A smack on the cheek!

I tried to keep this blog professional as an illustrator and normally don't do this girly thing lol (well maybe sometimes) but he kissed me on my cheek with his nose! It was so overwhelming that I can't keep it low! I didn't know that coming so I was wearing a awkward smirk on my face under the sticker which y'all will never see :-P

Be nice to the animals, for they can always give you more than you could ever imagine/offer!
(And we truly owe them too much to make it up.)

If we keep excluding other living things from this land and using up the resources incontinently, then we will be living all alone soon.

Bulldog and the old man

Bulldog and the old man in YongKang Park, Taipei

One thing that appeals to me about animals and companion animals is that they don't treat you differently by your appearance, age, physical and mental healthiness, bank account, occupation, political view or your moral standard. All they have is feeling. (Unless you hit them then out of instinct they defend or attack.)

I think I'm just repeating what everyone already knew. But it is still touching when you see it and you feel the connection between animals and people. I saw this bulldog and the old man in YongKang Park in Taipei. When I walked close and asked what the dog's name is and stuff, the old man started to babble about the dog getting really heavy but he said that with a smile on his face.

I felt warm and fuzzy listening because this is love. It is when you complain about someone but in the meantime you accept all of him/her and you are never going to change the true him/her. (Wait, are we still talking about dogs?) Awww... so let's listen to John Legend's All of Me. Haha!

所以今天來聽 John Legend 的 All of me 吧  哈哈!

They’ll like you for the rest of their lives

“Animals have no pockets. They’re not fake. They’re not trying to put you on. All they want is a little food, a pat on the head, and a little love... They’re not trying to hide something, because the only thing they’ve got is their feelings. If you make them like you, they’ll like you for the rest of their lives. They’ll forgive you for a lot of stuff. You don’t have to apologize to them, but it’s good to apologize to them, ‘cause they know... And if you want animal friends, please get them from the pound. They appreciate it. A little love, a little food, and you’ve got friends for life.”

-Isaac Sidney "Sid" Caesar

Feeding a stray dog

I bumped into him on my way home.
He was so skinny and starved that after I gave him 2 sticks of chewy treat I can see him still wanted more but too alert as a street dog to show his desire to human.

So I told him to wait there for me and rushed to get a can in the nearest convenient store. After I came back he was still there and then he seemed to gobble up the food all at once. Poor baby :(

The thing I don't understand is that he actually wears a collar. Either it's because he was abandoned, or his owner just put it around his neck for the person's own superiority and then left him outside and wandering. (So the guy doesn't have the responsibility to feed him.) Either case it is wayyyyy too irresponsible as an owner!

Never abandon your pet, folks!

In a search of peacefulness

I am not quite sure it is because the tender nature of pencil drawing or the affection toward these beautiful creatures that calms me down and eases my whatsoever bitterness and agony. Anyway it just did.

I do wish there is World Peace in the near future for all the living things on Earth (and no more invasion to other planet, seriously, do we need another planet to destroy?? Why not treasure what we have now on the magnificent Earth?), meanwhile I try to keep the peacefulness in my mind lasting as long as possible. I found myself popping the bubbles in the bubble wrap when I was working in the bookstore. I went blank in my mind and stood there for like minutes and not aware of what I was doing until someone came in the staff room.

"I think I'm sick."
"Everyone is a bit sick here so you'll be fine."

Encounter my sunshine on the street

Always always always feel so enlightened to encounter the same cat on the street!
Even though she never remembers me - which is not an issue to me at all, I'm so heartened to meet her twice and to know she's doing good.

Because! It's so tough to live on the street that we couldn't possibly imagine. Their average lifespan is said to be only 3 years, compared to the 10-12 years of a house cat (or dog), because of the car accidents, wound infections, dogs chasing-after, irregular meals, or the capture to the shelters.

So... Never ever abandon your pet to the street, it could kill them and it really hurts their feelings.
(Yes they do have feelings and emotions.)

Charlotte Wood in an interview about her book ‘Animal People’

I was doing research on the internet to make illustrations about zoo animals, and then this book cover showed up and appeared to be appealing to me. I never read this book before but here are some good quotes worth thinking upon in the interview with Charlotte Wood on her book ‘Animal People
"I highly recommend visiting a zoo to observe human behaviour—it’s really quite enthralling. People are very, very weird. One of the most striking things I noticed was how desperate we seem to be, at zoos, for the animals to look at us."
"We sentimentalise animals to almost exactly the same extent that we brutalise them, and while anthropomorphism can be a good thing (in understanding, for example, when animals might feel pain), it can also be disrespectful and narcissistically human-centred in assuming that what is good for us is good for animals. What I’m interested in is the many kinds and levels of denial we employ in our behaviour towards animals."

The kind of friends

The owner of a hotpot restaurant and a stray cat (TNR'd) sat together on a park bench in the afternoon. I have once seen him feeding the cat, but when I saw this, it looked just like they are two close friends - the kind of friends that you don't feel any awkward sitting side by side without talking.

And then you heal

I don't know why they did it to you.

I really want to tell you that it's okay and you will be fine after this injury.
But it's not.
It's not going to be okay living with half face cut out and with bones exposed to the air.

All it will turn out to be is less hurtful and you will be more adapted to the reality that you cannot always have control of. But no one can live in the reality without constraints and struggles, breathe in the sadness and happiness and you go love again.

And then you heal. And you live on.

Twelve Nights

Enlargeable picture here

I made this based on some of the shocking and heartbreaking scenes in the movie "Twelve Nights", a documentary about dogs captured into a Taiwanese government-fund shelter, and how they spend their last twelve days of life whether or not they make it out of the shelter. I found a blogger who did a really good writeup in English about Twelve Nights. Link here.

Translation from upper left, counterclockwise:

The fiercest dog or the one which has the topmost hierarchy in the cage has the privilege to eat first, so the weak ones could end up eating nothing and curling up in the corner in days in a row. (Because of overloaded with abandoned/lost pets and strays, the sanitary situation in the shelter is way below the standard.)

Some dogs cuddle together to make companion, others protect each other during cleanup flush. There are also dogs just staring at the cage wall, waiting. They do not know if it is life or death that is coming ahead.

A dog tried to escape from the rope on his neck. He bit the stick so hard (out of instinct) that he broke his teeth right on the spot, leaving blood stains all over the floor.

Lots of dogs die in their waste and vomit without dignity. The only chance they can get out of this hell-like shelter (pardon my word) is to be adopted and never be dumped when they get sick and grow older.  The story would be totally different for them and for the adopter as well.

There are puppies which cannot make it to grow up and sick dogs with no medical treatment (for sooner or later they are going to die in the shelter) getting euthanized every day in Taiwan. Is it because they do not have vote, they do not have choice?

That day, a owner called and asked the staff to take his dog away from his place. After he was informed that the abandoned dog will be put down, he waved his hand and dismissed the staff, as well as the dog, in a fifteen-minute consideration... How could a life be put out like this..

A smart and brave dog climbed up to the top of the cage, no one knew how he did it. He was caught and dragged down after all the effort, and was put into another small cage for the rest of the days. He died in a few days. He could not make it out after all.

----------

It caused me huge pain and heartache to recall what is in the movie and what is wrong with our society and I could not stop my tears when I was drawing and writing. But I have to. The more people know the truth, the greater chance we have to save them from fear and threat.

Please tell your friends to adopt rather than buy, microchip the pets, and never ever abandon your furry friend. If they misbehave, experts and animal behaviorists are out there that you can seek for help.
There are always solutions, so is hope.

The animals look at every of us with no difference, and they never give up on us.
Why would us?
