The kind of friends

The owner of a hotpot restaurant and a stray cat (TNR'd) sat together on a park bench in the afternoon. I have once seen him feeding the cat, but when I saw this, it looked just like they are two close friends - the kind of friends that you don't feel any awkward sitting side by side without talking.

And then you heal

I don't know why they did it to you.

I really want to tell you that it's okay and you will be fine after this injury.
But it's not.
It's not going to be okay living with half face cut out and with bones exposed to the air.

All it will turn out to be is less hurtful and you will be more adapted to the reality that you cannot always have control of. But no one can live in the reality without constraints and struggles, breathe in the sadness and happiness and you go love again.

And then you heal. And you live on.

Twelve Nights 十二夜

Enlargeable picture here
點此看可以放大的圖

I made this based on some of the shocking and heartbreaking scenes in the movie "Twelve Nights", a documentary about dogs captured into a Taiwanese government-fund shelter, and how they spend their last twelve days of life whether or not they make it out of the shelter. I found a blogger who did a really good writeup in English about Twelve Nights. Link here.

Translation from upper left, counterclockwise:

The fiercest dog or the one which has the topmost hierarchy in the cage has the privilege to eat first, so the weak ones could end up eating nothing and curling up in the corner in days in a row. (Because of overloaded with abandoned/lost pets and strays, the sanitary situation in the shelter is way below the standard.)

Some dogs cuddle together to make companion, others protect each other during cleanup flush. There are also dogs just staring at the cage wall, waiting. They do not know if it is life or death that is coming ahead.

A dog tried to escape from the rope on his neck. He bit the stick so hard (out of instinct) that he broke his teeth right on the spot, leaving blood stains all over the floor.

Lots of dogs die in their waste and vomit without dignity. The only chance they can get out of this hell-like shelter (pardon my word) is to be adopted and never be dumped when they get sick and grow older.  The story would be totally different for them and for the adopter as well.

There are puppies which cannot make it to grow up and sick dogs with no medical treatment (for sooner or later they are going to die in the shelter) getting euthanized every day in Taiwan. Is it because they do not have vote, they do not have choice?

That day, a owner called and asked the staff to take his dog away from his place. After he was informed that the abandoned dog will be put down, he waved his hand and dismissed the staff, as well as the dog, in a fifteen-minute consideration... How could a life be put out like this..

A smart and brave dog climbed up to the top of the cage, no one knew how he did it. He was caught and dragged down after all the effort, and was put into another small cage for the rest of the days. He died in a few days. He could not make it out after all.

----------

It caused me huge pain and heartache to recall what is in the movie and what is wrong with our society and I could not stop my tears when I was drawing and writing. But I have to. The more people know the truth, the greater chance we have to save them from fear and threat.

Please tell your friends to adopt rather than buy, microchip the pets, and never ever abandon your furry friend. If they misbehave, experts and animal behaviorists are out there that you can seek for help.
There are always solutions, so is hope.

The animals look at every of us with no difference, and they never give up on us.
Why would us?
